Abstract

Hirschsprung disease is a congenital disorder caused by abnormal development of the enteric nervous system and absence of ganglion cells in the affected intestinal segment. It remains an important problem in pediatric surgery because of variable clinical presentation, diagnostic difficulties, the risk of enterocolitis, and the need for long-term follow-up. 
The literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and eLibrary databases. Current approaches to rectal biopsy, pull-through procedures, postoperative complications, and long-term bowel dysfunction are considered. Individualized surgical management and long-term follow-up are emphasized.
